Saturdays in May at the Post Office will bring Cretan-Australian musicians Nikos, Adonis and Apollonia Xylouris together to pick up the rich Xylouris Ensemble thread spun by their father Psarogiorgos (Giorgos Xylouris) and mother Shelagh Hannan in the early 90s, and continuing to take new forms now. The Xylouris will be playing with original Ensemble members Mairéad and Dee Hannan and Alice Garner, alongside cousin and percussionist Rory Hannan, with the Ensemble continuing its evolution as an inter-generational group playing a unique combination of Cretan and original Melbourne-crafted music.
Giorgos Xylouris is currently touring in Europe and the US with Xylouris White, his genre-smashing duo with Jim White, so cannot join us for the residency. What you will hear is the inimitable combination of Cretan lyra, lutes, mandolin, voices, violin, cello and percussion, weaving old and new musical paths together.
The Xylouris Ensemble has recorded many albums, the most recent being AERA, released in 2014, featuring original music by Giorgos Xylouris, Mairéad Hannan as well as reworkings of traditional Cretan tunes.
