Duke Batavia was a scoundrel, sailor and crooner born in 1927 in Surabaya, Indonesia as a Dutch citizen. He fled his homeland after Indonesian independence in 1949, and for the rest of his life he worked on ships, not settling anywhere for long. He died in 1967 in Baltimore, Maryland, leaving nothing behind but stories and songs that incorporated the styles he gathered along the way - Tin Pan Alley, Hawaiian, blues, country, doo wop and rock n roll.
