Stanley Gawurra Gaykamangu is a Yolngu performer hailing from Arnhem Land with a deeply resonant voice and musical sensitivity to match. He was born on the Gove Peninsula and spent time as a child on his grandmother’s land of Yathalamara before moving to live on Milingimbi Island with his family.
He is a well-known song man in Arnhem Land with a big following. He is strongly connected to his Country and traditional culture and sings in the Gupapuyngu language of East Arnhem Land. The songs are his traditional songlines. Gawurra says ‘We don’t write these songlines down, we sing, this is how we learn. We sing from the heart and mind’.
Joining him on stage the afternoon of the 12th will be Alice Skye - an Aboriginal Australian singer/songwriter originally from Horsham. With influences such as Missy Higgins, Regina Spektor and Joan Armatrading, the pairing of vocals and piano creates a powerful fusion of indigenous and country songwriting traditions.
The Post Office Hotel is delighted to host Gawurra and Alice Skye on the 12th of June. Playing 2 seperate sets from 6pm, it will surly be a fantastic night of Australian music.
