The Distant South

  • The Post Office Hotel 229-231 Sydney Rd Coburg, VIC, 3058 Australia (map)

The Distant South is a captivating altcountry/ Americana band based out of Melbourne, Australia. With heartfelt lyrics and captivating melodies, their songs delve into themes of love, loss, hope, and the challenges of navigating life's often difficult journey. Their music reflects the authentic voice of Nick Howells’ song writing and is brought to life through a rich blend of instruments including acoustic guitar (Nick), Dobro (Brad Partridge), Banjo (Peter Folino), double bass (Tim Cav), drums (John Otis) and violin (Renee Bufton) - along with Nick’s distinctive voice and Renee’s beautiful harmonies.

Their debut, self-titled album, recorded with Myles Mumford at Rolling Stock Studios and mastered by Adam Dempsey at Deluxe, perfectly captures the bands unique sound and variety of influences. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Sierra Ferrell, Liz Stringer, Jason Isbell, Kerryn Fields, and Gillian Welch, The Distant South embraces the acoustic nature of their sound while fearlessly exploring different musical territories.

The bands unique sound and authentic story telling have garnered them a growing fan base and critical acclaim that has seen them play at many of Melbourne’s favourite independent music venues and live to air on community radio. In 2023, the band has been extensively touring their new record playing alongside artists such as Misty Harlowe, The Burning Bridges and Joyce Prescher.
